Despite students protest, Ogun University insists on no fees, no exam policy

Ogun government said that all students yet to pay tuition fees must not be allowed to sit for the examinations.

Students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, on Monday embarked on a protest in an attempt to stall the planned semester examinations.

The students, who barricaded the university gate, were protesting Sunday’s pronouncement by the state government that all students yet to pay tuition fees must not be allowed to sit for the examinations.

The protesting students were eventually disbanded by armed security operatives before staff and others could gain access to the campus. Some of the students complained on social media of harassment and attack by security operatives in a bid to disband them.

Though normalcy returned to the University after some hours of protest, Monday’s proposed examination was shelved.

Reacting to the development, the Acting Registrar of university, Omolara Osunsanya, said on the telephone that the University still stands on its statement of no school fees, no examination.

She said the students protest will not make the institution rescind its position on the tuition fees and the examinations would continue.

Ms. Osunsanya later sent a statement to PREMIUM TIMES explaining that the management is acting in line with National University Commission, NUC, directive.

“In line with the demand of Federal Government through the NUC request that all universities should provide a comprehensive students audit within six weeks. In the light of this, any student of this university who is in doubt of his/her status should urgently see his /her Provost/Dean or the Dean of Student Affairs for confirmation’ the statement reads. The public is requested to note that only students with matriculation numbers are considered bonafide students of the University. Parents are hereby requested to confirm that their children and wards have matriculation numbers to qualify for being listed on the Federal Government Audit List.

“Only regularized students on the Federal Government Audit List with authentic matriculation number will be issued with identity cards before examination’ the statement further declared. All students are advised to abide by this directive in their own interest,” the statement read.
