LP wants governors to account for security votes.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind President Goodluck Jonathan for declaring a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States, saying it would restore peace and stability to the troubled states as well as the polity.
The party’s position was made known by its spokesman, Olisa Metuh, in an interview with journalists.
“You cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs,” Mr Metuh said. “We are 100% behind the president’s action and we call on all responsible citizens to rally round the security officials of the nation at these trying times. With President Jonathan Nigeria will overcome our security challenges.”
Also, the Labour Party, LP, commended Mr Jonathan for taking the measure to bring back peace in the states.
The National Chairman of the party, Dan Nwanyanwu, said that state governments should be blamed for any security breaches in their states, just as he wondered what the governors do with huge security votes at their disposals.
“The argument that the state is not in control of the military and police and that they cannot do anything is wrong. Why do governors collect security votes? They should stop collecting security votes if that flimsy excuse is what they will present as their defence.
“The security votes run into hundreds of millions every month. Any governor giving such excuse has no business being governor of a state.
“Every day they are with the Commissioner of Police; don’t they hold Security Council meetings in the states where the military commanders, commissioner of Police and all other security agencies including the SSS meet? Who presides over the meeting, is it not the governor? Yet they keep saying they don’t control the security. They should accept full responsibility of what happened in their states.
“I want to say that President Jonathan has done the best by declaring state of emergency in all those states where these mass killing has been very prevalent.
“I think Mr. President did not shy away from this responsibility and has not allowed people to mis-advise him on this because it has reached a stage where security men are killed without blinking of an eye, policemen are mauled down and soldiers are killed.
“So for how long shall we continue to wait and expect the governors of the states who, of course, are aware of those who are doing all those things but have refused to give such information for fear of attack or for whatever reasons they have?
“These people are in their states, local government, hamlets and you have a governor. The political class should have been removed completely.”
