The former minister urged the public to buy his book to enable him raise some money to finance his children’s education.
Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and author of The Accidental Public Servant on Friday, at a book presentation in Canada, said he stands to lose a lot from having written the book early this year.
Mr. El Rufai, who was unable to be at the book presentation due to his inability to obtain a visa from the Canadian Embassy in time, sent his speech, which was read out to the audience.
“I have nothing to gain by expressing honest opinions about policies, processes and persons. Indeed, personally, I stand to lose a lot from writing this book. I have written it because I believe it will contribute in some way to make our leaders more accountable and our country to function even slightly better,” he said
Also in the speech, Mr. El-Rufai prayed that his audience to buy and read the actual book rather than just the reviews being done by people who have not read the book. He said the proceeds from the book might help him raise some money to finance his children’s education.
He also expressed the hope that the book might convince readers that politics and public service is too important a responsibility to be left to “the likes of a governor who is now enjoying free accommodation provided by Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain and Canada!”
“I hope you will appreciate the role that destiny has cut out for Nigerians in Diaspora in the struggle to salvage our nation from incompetent governance, insecurity, corruption and a pervasive culture of impunity,” he added.
Stating his motives for writing his book, Mr. El-Rufai said he strongly believed the documentation of his almost a decade involvement in Nigeria’s governance would provide information for transparency and accountability on roles of events and leaders in the country.
