Russia is a strong ally of the Assad government.
Two Russian airplanes, carrying 60 tonnes of relief aid, landed on Wednesday at an airport in Syria’s coastal city of Latakia, local media reported.
It is the latest Russian aid shipment to support the Syrian people deep in a prolonged political crisis.
Russia, a main ally of Damascus, has been trying recently to project itself as a friendly country to all Syrians, not only the government.
Moscow has also slammed the EU’s recent move to ease an oil embargo on Syria that aims to facilitate importing Syria’s oil only from rebels-held areas in northern and eastern Syria.
Earlier this month, Russia sent aid to Syrian refugees in neighbouring Lebanon, including 1,500 blankets, 500 sets of dishes, baby food and various preserved food.
The UN Higher Refugees Council said in its latest report that some 396,000 Syrians have left their conflict-torn country and now stay in Lebanon since the start of the turmoil in March 2011.
