Gunmen on Monday night kidnapped the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Kehinde Bamigbetan.
Mr. Bamigbetan, a former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos, was kidnapped while being driven home by his driver.
The kidnappers reportedly shot into the air at about 11:00 p.m. as the chairman was being driven into his street in Ejigbo. They stopped his car, beat his driver, and took him away.
Unconfirmed reports say Mr. Bamigbetan’s kidnappers have demanded a ransom of $1 million (N155 million).
Mr. Bamigbetan, a former students’ union leader of Obafemi Awolowo University is very active on social media, using every opportunity to discuss his task, challenges and achievements as a council chairman.
Kidnapping has been on the rise in various parts of Nigeria; although the police in Lagos said kidnapping for ransom is on the decrease in the state because of the partial ban of commercial motorcycle riders.
The Lagos Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, asked to be given time to respond to the kidnap and the ransom demand.
