The gunmen still remain at large.
Gunmen on Wednesday killed the Deputy Controller of Prisons in charge of the Sokoto Central Prison, Usman Gwandu, at SARDA Quarters in Sokoto.
The gunmen, who fled the scene after the attack, were said to have shot several times at Mr. Gwandu’s vehicle. They did not, however,
take anything from the vehicle.
It was learnt that the gunmen trailed the controller to the scene, where they struck around 10:00 p.m. Residents of the area said they
could not rescue Mr. Gwandu due to sporadic gunshots fired by the assailants. Some of the residents, however, summoned courage and went to the scene of the attack after about an hour.
The controller was later rushed to the Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, where he was confirmed dead by doctors. His remains have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary. The corpse, according to a hospital source, will be released to his family on Thursday for burial at Gwandu in Kebbi.
The spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, Sani Salisu, confirmed the incident. Mr. Salisu said the command had commenced
investigations to unravel those behind the act.
