Road safety Marshal killed by speeding truck

FRSC arrested 246 traffic offenders in 5 states during the Easter celebrations.

A speeding truck knocked and killed a Federal Road Safety Corp Marshal while on patrol duties in Kogi state on Saturday before its driver escaped, the agency said.

The truck, a Mercedes Benz with registration number, XB 30 KTU, fatally hit Regular Marshal, Iyakwo Danlami, along the Zariagi-Lokoja Road.

The driver’s assistant was arrested and had been handed over to the “B” Division of the Nigeria Police in Lokoja, a statement by the commission’s Public Education Officer, Jonas Agwu, said on Sunday.

The truck belongs to one Bolaji Rafiu, of 17 Imam Ojoku Street, Agege, Lagos.

Mr. Danlami, the killed officer, was attached to the Zariagi Unit Command of the FRSC in Kogi.

“The body of the late Marshal has been deposited at the Lokoja Specialist Hospital Mortuary,” the commission said.

Meanwhile the commission said it has arrested 246 motorists in Kwara, Edo, Osun, Jigawa and Ekiti States for violating various traffic offences in the commission’s ongoing nationwide special patrol for the Easter festivities.

The statement said 232 of the offenders had been convicted and fined by mobile courts, while 14 were cautioned and discharged.

The statement noted that speed limit violation, dangerous driving, over-loading and non-use of seat belt were the prevalent offences.
