The African Union, AU, on Monday announced the suspension of the Central African Republic, CAR, after rebels over-ran the capital city and seized power.

The AU also imposed travel bans and asset freezes on rebel leaders, Reuters reported.

The Peace and Security Council “has decided to suspend with immediate effect the Central African Republic from all the African Union’s activities,” Ramtane Lamamra, the AU’s Commissioner for Peace and Security, said in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, the headquarters of the AU.
