The group says the abduction of its Commander is in violation of his fundamental human rights.
An Islamic Movement in Nigeria has accused the State Security Service, SSS, of abducting an associate of its leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky, known as Haruna Abbas Ali.
Mr. Ali, who is the head of the Hurras, otherwise known as the Orderly arm of the Islamic Movement, was reportedly picked in his residence on Saturday, March 16 by men suspected to be from the SSS.
A press release from the group Saturday, signed by one Hamza Ngaski, called on the leadership of the SSS to release Mr. Ali immediately; otherwise they would have no option than to go to court.
“We request the unconditional release of our Commander, Haruna Abbas Ali and any innocent person that is unlawfully and unjustifiably abducted and in detention in your custody,” the group said.
“Should the authorities fail, refuse or neglect to release the unlawfully abducted and detained Commander of our Hurras, we will be forced to go to court to cause the enforcement of his Fundamental Human Rights and all his constitutionally guaranteed freedoms that are unlawfully contravened,” it added.
The group said neither its activities nor those of its members affects the security of Nigeria in anyway.
“It is important to know that the Hurras Command are a law abiding Association of well meaning and peaceful citizens of Nigeria, whose duties and objectives include rendering selfless service to humanity, orderly conduct of its members, assisting the law enforcement agencies in any field of social controls, volunteering in regulating traffic control, serving and giving aid to the needy and those in serious need of emergency, protection against unwarranted attacks,” it said.
History of abuse
The movement said the activities of its Hurras organization has been in operation since 1978 to date, adding that more than 30 years on;” Our Command, Staff and volunteers have suffered series of molestations, unjustified killings, arrests and detention from the hands of various Security Operatives, from one regime to another, from one leadership to another; without any just cause. Up till today, none of our command, Staff and or Volunteers has ever violated the sanctity of the National Security of Nigeria.”
The group said all its activities are conducted publicly, “in the open eyes of all Security Agencies in Nigeria”.
‘Our abducted Commander Haruna Abbas Ali has never committed any security breach against any law or against any Security Organ.
“We humbly request the Authorities of the State Security Service to discharge their duties objectively and avoid any unpatriotic interest apart from genuine National Security interest”.
Ready to cooperate
The group said its members welcome any reasonable investigation that may be conducted by security agencies and promise to accord the security services “every necessary cooperation that can reveal the truth to the glare of the general public”.
It said, however, that law enforcement agencies must abide by the dictates of the law in carrying out their operations including obtaining search warrants before searching private homes of its members.
