The APC is expected to be Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Barring any last minute changes, the new coalition of four opposition parties, All Progressives Congress, APC, will, on Wednesday, adopt a green-white-blue background logo.

It may also adopt “Justice, Peace and Prosperity” as its motto.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), early last month, announced their plan to merge into a single party to be known as APC.

The proposed party had set up three committees, two weeks ago, to draft its manifesto and constitution as part of its preparation to apply to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration.

The committees, which comprise 20-members each, will turn in their reports on Wednesday to the main Joint Inter-Party Merger Committee.

A major feature of the logo, which was recommended by the Manifesto Committee, is the inclusion of a broom. The broom is placed at the centre (white) of the logo.

The broom is the symbol of the ACN.

A source in one of the committees chaired by Audu Ogbeh, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), told PREMIUM TIMES that the retention of the ACN symbol of broom as part of APC logo was hotly debated as some argued that it would create the impression that ACN is dominating the other parties in the merger arrangement.

It was further learnt that those who favour the inclusion of the broom were of the view that it is generally more acceptable than ANPP’s maize and CPC’s pen.

Early in the life of the Manifesto Committee, which was tasked to draw up the motto, slogan and message, there were initial disagreements over the inclusion of APGA’s symbol following the insistence by a faction of the party that it was not part of the merger deal.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, led some members of the party to the merger, which a faction loyal to his Anambra State counterpart, Peter Obi, denounced.

The Manifesto Committee has reportedly recommended that the party moves towards the left as its philosophical and ideological content.

The committee has recommended free education, public sector investment and internal democracy as part of its manifesto of the proposed party.

Meanwhile, ahead of the presentation of the reports, the 11 APC governors are reportedly set to meet with the members of the three committees on Tuesday to harmonize their views.

The governors are Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Ibikunle Amosu (Ogun), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), all of ACN.

The ANPP governors expected to attend the meeting are Ibrahim Gaidam (Yobe), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Abdulazeez Yari Abubakar (Zamfara). Others are Tanko Al-Makura of CPC and Rochas Okorocha of APGA.

    • George you don’t seem to know what you are saying.

  • Bem Luu

This is another move that will see the merger members get themselves in physical combat in broad daylight. It is a laughable idea because it looks as if they are bowing down in reverence to Buhari and EL-rufai. So what is the plight of people like Tinubu, Tony Momoh, Okorocha, Oshiomhole etc.
I dont want to sound like a prophet of doom but from common sense, my belief is that the marriage is built on so many opposite structure.
If this reports, which I believe is something to go by is fulfilled, it simply means that the ACN is the first among the political parties.

    • You sound like a prophet of doom hence some of you don’t see anything good in the merger, why not proffer the alternative?

    • adams

concerned nigerian said they are bowing to ACN because of the broom symbol, you said they are bowing to el rufai and Buhari of CPC, so who shall we believe between you Bern luu and concerned nigerian. Anyway I am not sure I want four more years from President Jonathan (i) whose family I do not know and (ii) who lied to Nigerians about the health of his wife and the wife returned again to lie. I do not want lie lie lie family. It is a moral issue , it is not ethnic issue

  • concernednigerian

Of course the broom symbol is for a regional party called ACN and so is APC. I hope they will not cause mayhem when they fail to win the presidency with their lack of national identity.

    • Abiodun

conerned nigerian, so you are ready to vote For President Jonathan who LIED to Nigerian children and youths about the condition of his wife? Haba! So our children and youths should also LIE? I am not sure that I want to have another four years of a president whose family I do not even know. When we talk of 419, then it has a source-the presidency!

  • IT WILL BE UNFAIR FOR APC TO USE THE SYMBOL OF ANY EXCITING PARTY.I THINK TWO HANDS BROKEN FROM A CHAIN WHICH REPRESENT FREEDOM WILL BE A PERFECT SYMBOL

  • don bash

i think the broom symbol is more easier even for those in village to recognise.the broom is ok. lets not be selfish.

  • Neutral logo should be used, instead of ACN’s. The name ‘All Progressive Congress’ is Ok, because it contains a bit of each merger party’s old name – All is shared with ANPP, All Progressive are shared with APGA, Congress is shared with ACN, Congress and Progressive are shared with CPC. But, the ‘logo’ is mainly for ACN. As a member of the merger party, APC, I strongly opposed the adoption of logo of one of the member parties. It will give members of ACN a domineering influence, though the ‘used broom’ is the exact broom used in Hausa land not isn’t the broom used in the Yoruba land or Southern Nigeria.
