APGA state chairmen dissociate themselves from APC

A faction of APGA lsays it is not in any agreement with new Nigerian party.

State chairmen of a faction of the All Grand Progressive Alliance, APGA, led by Maxi Okwu on Tuesday dissociated themselves from the recent merger of four political parties, insisting that they are not bound by any agreement reached in the merger process.

The chairmen stated this after a meeting in Abuja.

The faction has the support of Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, one of the two APGA governors.

Just two weeks ago, Mr. Obi had, in collaboration with some party faithful, appointed Mr. Okwu as acting national chairman.

The faction had earlier flayed the other governor, Rochas Okorocha, for participating in the talks that led to the birth of All Progressive Congress, a coalition of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, without the support of the party’s leadership.

Chairman of APGA in Plateau State, Isah Jega, who read the communiqué at the end of the caucus meeting of state chairmen, said the party was not notified; neither did it participate in the deliberations that led to the merger.

They asked the national leadership of the party to, as a matter of urgency, embark on new membership registration and review the membership register and congress, ahead of its national convention billed for Enugu soon.

The chairmen resolved that former members should be re-admitted unconditionally to the party provided they express genuine desires to do so. Those who were previously sanctioned by the party, they counseled, should be pardoned.

They commended the policy thrust of the Maxi Okwu’s led interim National Working Committee of the party, adding that the idea of rapprochement, reconciliation, and re-integration came at the right time.

Mr. Okwu urged the former chairman of the party, Victor Umeh, to join in rebuilding the party to enable it move forward.
