After six deaths and houses destroyed, police quell Benue communal crisis

The two-day crisis which claimed six lives and property worth millions of naira including 10 houses has been doused, the Police Command in Benue has said.

The Command said it has quelled the communal crisis between Utange and Mbayion communities in Katsina -Ala Local Government Area of the State.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ezeala, said on Wednesday in Makurdi, that the Anti-Riot Squad of the command crushed the uprising on Tuesday night.

Mr. Ezeala, who said that the command had commenced investigation into the crisis, appealed to the warring communities to embrace peace.

The crisis broke out following a misunderstanding between a member of Utange and his counterpart form Mbayion.

Witnesses said that the crisis led to the death of a prominent member of the Mbayion community.

They added that reprisal attacks led to more deaths, destruction of houses as well as property.

The State House of Assembly had, on Tuesday, directed the Commissioner of Police to draft more security personnel to the area to bring the situation under control.
