Nigeria Customs officer shoots colleague dead

Nigerian Custom Officer

The officer accidentally shot dead his colleague, the Customs have said.

A Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Tunde Oseni, accidentally shot dead a colleague during an operation on the Seme-Badagry Expressway in Lagos State on February 16.

This was made known by Uche Ejesieme, the Public Relations Officer, Federal Operation Unit Zone “A“ of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Mr. Ejesieme, in a statement, said that the death resulted from an “accidental discharge”.

He said eight officers, led by Mr. Oseni, were on patrol on the Seme-Badagry Expressway on Saturday when they intercepted two vehicles loaded with items suspected to be smuggled and prohibited.

“While the officers attempted to apprehend the suspects alongside with the goods, there was stiff resistance by the suspects, which degenerated into a struggle between the officers and the smugglers.

“In the ensuing confusion, a service pistol in the possession of DSC Oseni, the team leader, accidentally discharged and hit Mr Baba Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs,” the statement said.

The spokesperson said Mr. Mohammed was immediately rushed to Igando General Hospital where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead.

Mr. Ejesieme said Mr. Oseni had been handed over to the police for further investigation.

this news is false and the Nigerian Customs is only trying to cover up a murder, we have heard of several accidental discharges but the all of them involved rifles. How can an experienced Custom Officer who has been with the enforcement for more than 10 years, claim to want to fire a warning shot and shot the ground? Why will a Deputy Superitendant be the one struggling with smugglers while his subordinate an Assistant Supretendant was sitting in front of the patrol vehicle? why did the bullet that was shot to the ground not hit the ASC sitting in front of the patrol car anywhere but on the forehead where he had no protection because he was putting on a bullet proof on his body. Nigeria Customs Service, this is a pure and clear murder and I expect everyone on that patrol to be apprehended because they are all trying to cover up the murder…

    • How did you know this much? Were you with the patrol team? While i appreciate the police to do a proper investigation, I would also want conspiracy theorists to hold their peace.

The pistol ‘accidentally’ aimed before it ‘accidentally’ discharged!
This is a dangerous precedent which must be stopped before it destroys all federal institutions.
