Jonathan denies signing agreement to serve for a single term

President Jonathan and party chiefs at a PDP National Convention

President Goodluck Jonathan has denied agreeing to run for only a single term expiring 2015, a day after Niger state governor, Babangida Aliyu, warned that the president will breach terms he reached with the governors should he seek re-election.

In a reaction Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, dismissed as ‘frivolous allegation” the claim that the president signed an agreement to the effect that he quits in 2015.

“The alleged agreement only exists in the figment of the imagination of somebody with presidential ambition,” Mr. Gulak said, referring to Mr. Aliyu’s ambition to succeed Mr. Jonathan in 2015.

“Anybody who has a presidential ambition, it is such a person’s constitutional right to have ambition.”

Mr. Aliyu, spoke in Kaduna state where he featured on Guest of the Week on Liberty Radio (91.7).

“I recall that at the time he was going to declare for the 2011 election, all the PDP Governors were brought together to ensure that we were all in the same frame of mind,” the governor said.

“And I recall that some of us said given the circumstances of the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua and given the PDP zoning arrangement, it was expected that the North was to produce the President for a given number of years.

“I recall that at that discussion, it was agreed that Jonathan would serve only one term of four years and we all signed the agreement. Even when Jonathan went to Kampala, in Uganda, he also said he was going to serve a single term.”

He however noted that the president had yet to declare whether he would be standing for fresh term or not.

But Mr. Gulak denied categorically there was ever such an agreement.

“President Goodluck Jonathan did not win the presidential election in Governor Aliyu’s state, Niger,” Mr. Gulak said.

“He should however go about his ambition without coming up with frivolous allegations. President Jonathan did not sign such an agreement with anybody to the best of my knowledge.”

    Gulak???? Hmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Easy

Where is Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa? I have missed his incisive comments in he last couple of weeks. At any rate, it is highly unlikely that GEJ signed such an agreement. Even if he did what is so spectacular in changing his mind? Remember, an open mind grows, while the closed mind retrogresses.

  • Eddy

A high priest of the Klingon empire wants to be president of Nigeria. Na waooo!

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

Aliyu has always been a clown

  • Joseph Afagha

Does Nigeria meant for only Hausa? What are the Northern part of Nigeria contributing to the economic development of Nigeria? Mr Aliyu who is stopping from contesting, why can’t you respect mr President for God sake? Whether you Aliyu and your partners likes it or not President GEJ must rule Nigeria complete as others have done. Go to hell and burn like ashes.

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

Don’t mind the drunkard of Niger state. He is irrelevant. He has tried to wrestle PDP from the president by removing Bamanga Tukur and failed miserably. this is another game after boko haram tactics has failed too. FOUR MORE YEARS.

  • Mr. Myle

Who could mpitikwelu be? If truely Jonathan sign a document. Let’s see it. One term or what ever they agreed on it is their problem. I guess Nigerians have already decided on an alternative APC. They should go and do their nonsense PDP. Aliyu and even the GEJ are all birds of the same feather. The killing corrupt destroying party. The PDP.

    • Tripple A.

Mr Myle – you saw my mind. Thanks for the comment.

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

You know Jonathan never signed any document but your hatred has blinded you. Jonathan has a right, just like any other Nigerian, to run for a second term, and come 2015, he will exercise it. You must be out of mind to think that APC poses any serious threat to Jonathan. The people will vote Jonathan not his party. Come 2015, the people will shout loud and clear from the middle belt, SS,SW, and South East: FOUR MORE YEARS. Buhari will win again in his sharia states and two or three performing governors in ACN will be returned. Mark my words!

  • Nuradeen Maut

Supposing he didn’t write any agreement with anybody or group of people if i can remember well mr president said it laud and clear to the world in addis ababa that he would only serve for one term. Why is he now trying to turn things around? But the most important thing is Nigerians know better now it is his right to seek for another term BUT that lies with the Nigerian masses or voters to decide whom to vote or not and i think unless oga jona is trying to deceive himself the writing is all over the wall for him to see that NIGERIANS DON’T WANT HIM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

Ranting of another CPC loser. You didn’t vote for Jonathan in 2011 and he still won. that is democracy. the majority will carry the day again in 2015. stop wasting your vote on Buhari.

    • Amos

I think that this is an admission that the Klingon from Niger is a liar.

  • angryniger

GEJ has been proved on so many occasions to be a liar, so why should we believe that he did not sign a single term bid, his wife lazarus patience jonathan has just proved this with her testimonies yesterday, they lied and lied to nigerians that lazarus jonathan was on a #well deserved break#, also ~GEJ lied on CNN when he said the electricity had improved, i am currently using a generator to write this, we have not had electricity for over 12 hours how, and even when we do its for a maximum of a few minutes. GEJ said it several times during his campaign that he would only do a single term of 4 years, now he and his croonies seem to be brain dead and cannot remember this, i wish our TV stations can go into their archieves to show the script. If Obama lies to the American people the way our president has been to us, he would have been impeached by now, but this is Nigeria, where anything goes

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

do you have any proof that the President lied? If you don’t’ you are the only liar here.

  • akpos1

What is wrong with 2nd term? Did the Otta Chimp not push for 3rd term? Did Demon abacha not push for life president? Did IBB not push for extension & further extension until he spent eight yrs? Great Jona who owns the resources MUST stay for the max eight yrs after which the SS&SE will pull out of Nigeria. Pure & Simple. If u dnt like my statement, get sufficiently angry & refuse to take my monthly handout from the federation account…I mean reject my sweet oil & gas.

Long live the United republic of the SS&SE

    • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

      Abeg, follow me ask them.

  • Mpitikwelu_na_Ugwu_Awusa

My question for Gov Aliyu is this; IF YOU HAD AN AGREEMENT THAT JONATHAN WILL RUN FOR ONE TERM, WHY DIDN’T NIGER STATE VOTE FOR JONATHAN IN 2011?
In any case, the plot here is to bully Jonathan as they did during the ‘consensus nonsense’. They failed miserable in 2011, they will fail harder in 2015. FOUR MORE YEARS.

  • God’s work

If what they said about the agreement is true, let them post the agreement so all will see or they should just shut up and allow the man to rest. Haba! since the inception of Jonathan leadership, the Hausas specifically have try in many ways to frustrate him. Please allow him to rest.
