Kaduna to empower 4000 citizens through SURE-P

Governor of Kaduna State, Mukhtar Yero

Mr. Yero said the Subsidy Re-investment Programme will tackle Kaduna’s unemployment.

The Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar Yero, said about four thousand citizens of the state will be empowered across the 23 Local Government Areas to curb unemployment and take the youth off the street through the Subsidy Re-investment Programme, SURE-P.

The Governor said this on Thursday while playing host to the United States of America Ambassador to Nigeria, Terrence McCulley, at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.

Three thousand youth and one thousand women are expected to be the beneficiaries of the programme.

Mr. Yero said apart from the SURE-P programme, the state government is looking into how it can utilize the agricultural sector to further empower the youth as most of the crises are as the results of lack of jobs and “an idle mind is a devil’s workshop”.

He informed Mr. McCulley that he will solicit the support of the people and government of the U.S. in that sector to make it attractive to the teeming youth.

On security and peace, the governor said Kaduna is very central and influential such that whatever happens there, affects the whole northern region and the country at large. He assured that his administration is poised to resolve any conflict through dialogue amicably as no development can be achieved without peace.

He applauded the effort of his predecessor, the late governor Patrick Yakowa, whose knowledge and experience he says was an asset to all.

The governor also paid tribute to the foremost civil rights activist in the U.S. Martin Luther King Jnr., whose anniversary the Ambassador is in Kaduna to celebrate.

“We can achieve anything without resorting to violence in line with the ideals of Dr King,” Mr. Yero said.

Earlier, the Ambassador said the U.S. will make its presence felt again in Kaduna by re-establishing an outlet to serve as “a window to reach the millions of people in the North”.

Mr. McCulley said Kaduna is historic and very important in the scope of things in the country. He expressed optimism as regards Nigeria tackling its current security challenges in the region, promising the support of his country to tackle the security challenges.
