Four die in Jigawa canoe mishap

Four people were killed in a canoe mishap in Kirikasamma Local Government Area of Jigawa.

A witness said the accident occurred on Tuesday when a wooden canoe conveying nine passengers capsized at the Hadejia River.

The witness, Hadi Musa, said in Kirikasamma on Thursday that the accident occurred when the canoe had a head-on with a bigger canoe moving in the opposite direction.

Mr. Musa said that five persons were rescued by local divers, while the bodies of four others were discovered several hours after the accident.

“The rescue effort was difficult due to the rising wave in the water and it took the divers more than 30 hours to recover the dead bodies,” he said.

He said the passengers were travelling from Machina Community in Yobe to Gubunsa Village in Jigawa.

“They were going to attend a wedding ceremony in Gubunsa village,” he added.

The Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa Police Command, Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident.
Mr. Jinjiri said that the deceased included a three-year-old boy, adding that investigation was still in progress to ascertain the cause of the accident.
