Authorities seal Abuja popular mall over filth

The traders resisted the closure of the mall.
Sanitation authorities on Thursday sealed the UTC shopping mall at Garki, Area 10, after traders failed to clean up the mall.

The environmental department of the Abuja administration moved in and sealed the mall, five days to Christmas, a peak sales period for most of the traders. The traders revolted, staging a protest that was quickly quelled by AK47 wielding police officers escorting the sanitation officials.

A sanitation officer sustained minor injuries after a detachment of the protesting traders mobbed him.

Another sanitation officer told PREMIUM TIMES that the traders were warned severally, but they ignored the warnings.

Users of the mall and sanitation officers have had a running battle over the disposal of wastes generated in the market.
