The PDP Chairman in Abia said the party does not need Mr. Kalu.
The Abia State Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, Emma Nwaka, has described a former Abia State Governor, Orji Kalu, as a politically drowning man clutching at straw in his new found love for Igbo presidency.
In a press statement in Abuja on Sunday, Mr. Nwaka reacted to an interview by Mr. Kalu, over the BBC Hausa Service, that no one can stop him from returning to the PDP.
He said it was apparent that the former governor has lost relevance at his home base, and was now seeking to berth at the national level.
Mr. Nwaka noted that it was the policy of the PDP that any member who had decamped and wanted to return to the party needed to pass through his home base, arguing that Kalu cannot be an exception.
“His reluctance to climb the tree from the base is clear indication that he has lost his relevance at home,” he added.
The chairman said that the calibre of personalities from Abia State who turned out at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja recently to reject Mr. Kalu was a clear indication that the former governor had shot himself on the foot and can no longer be accommodated in the PDP.
“If your home base rejects you in a political party, how do you operate at the national level?” he questioned.
Mr. Nwaka said Uche Chukwumerije, a Senator, whom Mr. Kalu described “as neither here nor there,” had roundly throunced him in the 2011 National Assembly Election.
He noted that there had been relative peace in the state PDP since the former governor left, maintaining that the party fared better without him.
He advised Mr. Kalu to continue with his political exploits and gerrymandering in his pan-ethnic Njiko Igbo where few know his schemes, rather than cause more trouble in PDP.
The party chairman identified with the rejection of Mr. Kalu by PDP leaders in Abia, saying their views expressed recently at the national secretariat represented the sentiments of the generality of party members in the state.
He described Mr. Kalu, a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, as a failed politician “who lost the two states of Abia and Imo to PDP due to his overbearing attitude which at the end destroyed the PPA.”
“Kalu is a dictator who cannot operate successfully in a democratic setting, hence he is quarreling with everybody including the present Governor T. A. Orji, who has stabilized the eight-year tenure of Kalu,” Mr. Nwaka said.
