Nigeria lost some members of its peacekeeping mission in Darfur

 

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, on Tuesday met to discuss regional efforts to address the crisis in Mali and Guinea Bissau.

The duo, who met at the UN Headquarters in New York, also discussed Nigeria’s contribution to peacekeeping efforts in Darfur.

About four Nigerian peacekeepers with the UN-AU peacekeeping mission, UNAMID, in Darfur, were killed and eight others injured on October 2. They were killed in an ambush by unidentified attackers. The troops have been in Darfur since 2007.

UNAMID mission in Darfur had in a report in New York said that the incident occurred some two kilometres from the mission’s regional headquarters in El Geneina.

Mr. Ban Ki Moon condoled with Nigeria and said that he was appalled and deeply saddened by the killing. He also urged the government of the Sudan to conduct a full investigation and to ensure that the perpetrators were swiftly brought to justice.

The UN Security Council also condemned in the strongest terms the killing of the peacekeepers

Recently, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson, called for an internationally sanctioned military action to expel the rebels in Mali from the northern part of the country.

Mr. Eliasson made the call in his remarks to an AU, ECOWAS and UN meeting of the Support and Follow-up Group on Mali, held in Bamako.

He said it is necessary for the international community to help the Malian authorities to regain control of all parts of the country.
