We now manufacture grinders, doors- Nigeria Postal Service

NIPOST has not lost its relevance, NIPOST official says

In order to cater for “other needs” of the public, the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, has gone into the production of household items like grinders and doors, a senior official of the service has said.

A manager in NIPOST, Tobenna Egbuonu, said this on Wednesday, at the ongoing Lagos International Trade Fair, while trying to justify the agency’s continuous relevance.

“Apart from the philatelic side of the service where stamps are sold and traded, we have also gone into the production of different products like grinders, doors and aluminum products.

“All these products are done completely by NIPOST Workshop as a new division catering for other needs of the public,” Mr. Egbuonu said.

The postal service official said the prevalent use of electronic mails, e-mails, has not affected use of postal services in the country. He said the Internet had actually brought more businesses for the Service.

“In fact, we are making more profits since the advent of the Internet and the widespread use of e-mails because people buy goods online which eventually have to send.

“Since the increasing use of the Internet, we have been sending and receiving more goods from abroad than what obtained in the past,” he said.

Mr. Egbuonu said that the volume of personal mails had, however, dropped. He said the drop was due to the prevalence of GSM which gave people the opportunity to communicate on line real time.

The official said that the reduction in inter-personal mails had not affected the profitability of NIPOST, explaining that there had been an increase in corporate and government mails.

“We have public and private companies that send out annual reports and dividends in large volumes. If we are not relevant, they would be using the Internet,” he said.
