At night, while the marketers were asleep, fire ravaged the stores and goods.
A midnight fire outbreak has consumed the popular Adire market in Itoku area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The fire, which occurred on Monday midnight, destroyed property worth millions of naira. About ten fabrics stores and structures were destroyed by the fire.
Some Traders – Toyin Akiode, Fausat Balogun and Nike Sorunke said they were alerted at midnight that their stores had been gutted by fire.
They appealed to the government and relevant agencies to assist them with funds to cushion the effect of the loss.
The chairman, Abeokuta South Local Government, Lanre Edun, assured that the government would look into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He advised the people to be safety conscious and ensure that efficient insurance policies cover inevitable loss and disasters.
The cause of the fire, which was quenched by men of the fire service, is not known though some traders said an electrical spark could have been the cause.
