The Nigerian Under 17 football team, Flamingoes, crashed out of the FIFA U-17 Women World Cup holding in Azerbaijan, after losing to France on penalties at the quarter-final stage.

The team played a larger part of the second half without their captain, Aidelomon, who was sent out with a red card after receiving a second yellow card in the match.

France dominated the match, having majority of the possession, particularly in the first half; but the Nigerian side, playing with 10 ladies, came close to winning the game in the later part of the second half. Ayinde, acting as captain, lost a clear chance after shooting wide on a one-on-one with the French goalkeeper.

No extra time was played after 90 mins as the game went straight to penalty shoot-out. The Flamingoes scored only three of their kicks while the French team scored all of theirs, after a terrible blunder by the Nigerian goalkeeper prevented her from stopping the French’s fourth penalty kick. The game ended 5-3 in favour of the French.
