Delta opens four more relief camps for flood victims

The floods in Delta State have displaced thousands of people in the state.

The relief camps in Delta State are receiving more people as the number of displaced persons increase daily.

The Delta State Government said, to accommodate the victims of the flood, it has opened four more relief camps.

The Commissioner for Special Duties, Tony Nwaka, said this in Asaba on Wednesday.

With the opening of the four new camps, the state now has nine relief camps to cater to the flood victims, Mr. Nwaka said.

He said the new camps are located at Ashaka, Ussisa, and Aboh, all in Ndokwa East Local Government Area; as well as Abari in Patani Local Government Area.

The commissioner said the number of displaced persons accessing the camps on a daily basis is on the increase, as the Ashaka relief camp was already recording more than 500 displaced persons.

He explained that the decision to open more camps is to ensure that for every community or local government affected by flood, there is a nearby rehabilitation centre to accommodate and cater for the victims.

He said that the state government, aside from feeding the displaced persons, provides mattresses and insecticide treated nets in thousands to the camps.

Mr. Nwaka, who is also head of the relief materials distribution team, said that generators, to ensure 24 hours power supply, had been provided in some of the camps, while efforts were being made to provide for others.

The commissioner said that government had also provided drugs for the medical care of the victims.
