Tribunal upholds 2006 census figures for Kano LGs

Three local governments in Kano had disagreed with the figures allotted to them by the NPC during the 2006 elections.

The Census Tribunal sitting in Abuja has upheld the 2006 population figures for three local government areas in Kano State as released by the National Population Commission, NPC.

The Chairman of Tribunal “A”, Abraham Yisa, disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr. Yisa said that the decision of the tribunal was based on the inability of the affected councils to support their petition with facts that their areas were not actually captured during the head count.

“NPC produced evidence to show that they did census in enumeration areas, not villages, and that those villages were captured in the enumeration areas which is the basis,’’ Mr. Yisa said.

“The finding of the tribunal is that the people were unable to prove that they were not counted; so we have upheld the result as released by NPC,’’ he added.

Rogo, Shanono and Sumaila local government areas had petitioned against the NPC, contesting the figures allotted to them in the 2006 census.
