#Nigeria2015: Goodluck Jonathan presidential declaration – Live Update

President Goodluck Jonathan

Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, is declaring his intention to contest the February 2015 presidential election today.

Mr. Jonathan, 57, will most likely be the candidate of his party in next year’s election. If reelected, Mr. Jonathan would remain in power till 2019. That would be a record almost 10 years in office as president.

Mr. Jonathan, an immensely lucky man, was sworn-in as late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s deputy on May 27, 2007. But after his boss fell ill, he became Acting President on February 9 2010.

Following the passage of Mr. Yar’Adua on May 6, 2010, Mr. Jonathan was sworn-in as President. He was then elected for a fresh term of four years in 2011, which runs out in May next year.

The president is now seeking a fresh term. After several months of preliminaries, the journey officially begins today with a formal declaration of his intention at the premium event venue in the nation’s capital, Eagles Square.

Follow the event as it unfolds through the eyes of our reporters who are at the Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the event.

I want to see the traitors that will come forward to speak for Mr President.. We will never forget. Hassan Adamu – North East, Peter Odili – South South, Jerry Gana – Middle Belt,… Of course Bode George – South West. (a rogue thief representing the thieves in the south west including Buruji – An Insult)

    • 247don007

What is your point exactly? Why not project your preferred candidate instead of having headache over others’ candidate?

      • Realnigerian

“Those who continue to defend this government, whose souls have been tied and enslaved to feel only sympathy for this government no matter how brazen the evil they perpetrate” – Elvis Iyorngurum

Most of you think criticizing the govt is the only way to make things right but you guys are wrong. Let me not digress…I still maintained that those not in support of the GEJ led govt should campaign for their preferred candidate(s). Marketing your product is better than condemning the available one with no provision for options.

Nigeria will survive and will become better. I can see and hear clearly the rejection of this farce by the crowds. People aren’t responding at all. I hope they are learning their lessons and knowing that money won’t buy them votes and people’s conscience this time around. Nigerians are tired!!! Follow the events life and read the lips and body language. Even those who are eulogizing the President don’t believe in what they were saying.

  • Innocent

So the South East people are selling their support in exchange for good roads, functional airports and a bridge. #Issokay

    • trippi

Better that than not having any …

I pledge 2 Nigeria my country to be working, voting,
and praying, To oppose the clueless and the
shoeless man that said 16 is greater than 19, To vote
out the man that said stealing is not corruption,Send
him packing from asorock come 2015.And restore
our long lost honour and glory, so help me God

GEJ just turned one minuite into 5 seconds

I am highly disappointed in Mr Ken Nnamani over the reasons he proffered for the Southeast support for Dr Jonathan. The road, the airport and the bridge, being over-recycled campaign promises, should be a cause for shame for both Jonathan his gang of cheerleaders represented by Nnamani. I was thinking that Southeast has something to gain by their continuing support for this obviously mediocre president. How many express roads, gigantic bridges and impressive airports have built in various parts of Nigeria without political preconditions or post-conditions. Yet the hopelessly myopic idiots who post themselves as leaders of the Southeast zone are bizarrely keen to redefine their rights as privileges. Nnamani was momentarily auspicious as a leader in the twilight of his senate presidency.Little did I imagine that he but one more unprincipled politician who would soon plot his own cascading fall from to the level of representing Sir Emeka Ofor at ceremonies, and and deceiving his people that Jonathan has anything in stock for them. I have nothing but scorn for Nnamani and his ilk. I can only hope that they may quickly fade away from the public stage, and that their offspring be their opposites.

Kudos to you, I particularly like “bizarrely keen to redefine their right as previlage”

Frankly speaking, sometime I imagine if this is the same Igbo my father told me about that made their ancestors proud before and during the war. As for Ken, honesty i share your thought about him, especially when he shot down the 3rd jet which was beamed live from the chambers of NASS. I pity him

Some people are just PDP’s robot. We need CHANGE, we need APC

Can somebody please give our President some water to drink as he reads his speech??

Lies Lies Lies, OMG more Lies !!!!

  • Ebola or Gej

of achievement Nigeria recorded under Jonathan administration? Just look
at power sector ?, then look at poverty level in the country, crime and
security challenges, Corruption and looting of government treasury, low
level of law and order all these and many more and here you are

    • Mr. Abdin

You are right my brother you said it all.

  • Chris1408

GEJ is declaring and dancing in Eagles Square, while Nigerians in northeast are dying daily from bombs and living in the mountains like monkeys to survive from terrorists. No sane president will seek reelection under this circumstance.

    Only in Nigeria.
Any other place would throw the bum out immediately. He has, and continues, to fail badly at his main job, protecting the citizens of Nigeria from the likes of Boko Haram.
Nigeria needs a real president and a real military because what they have now is nothing but a bad joke!

  • Dr Pat Kolawole Awosan

Nigerian people must not allow Mr Jonathan to take them for fools again like 2011 when Mr Jonathan claimed he did not own a pair of shoe. This time around Nigerians should better purchase a pair of shoe for Mr Ebele Jonathan, in order for him to return home back to Otuoke,Bayelsa State for retirement.
Mr Ebele Jonathan lacks the competency, capability, knowledge, intelligence and know-how human capacity to lead Nigeria forward as demonstrated to date in his past six years in power as Nigeria president. There is no security of lives and properties for Nigerians, power outages continue, teaching hospitals are in archaic state as Mr Jonathan and wife constantly travel to Germany for medical attention on Nigerian public expense. There is no employment generation initiative introduced by Mr Jonathan and his finance/leader of economy team,Dr Okonjo Iweala who are fond of announcing artificial economic development report and cooked up GDP as sign of economic development which did not impact the lives of Nigerian people.

    • chrislondonian

I Agree with you @DR PAT I pray that Nigeria can be wise and know what best for them as a country and as a Nation by not voting by tribal or sentiment, this man does not deserve second term nor the first term he got , but if he eventually get his hand of the seat again I hope Nigerians can bear the rate of suffering that will fall upon them, in reference to what happened in Burkina Faso is what should happen in Nigeria , even though is not democratically advisable. it has gotten to that time where we stand up and say No to the bad government in Nigeria, we being a slave in our fathers land , where our voice has no weight. ask friends and family living abroad to tell you how lives are being valued in a developed country , the death of any child can bring the standstill of a country. the present Nigeria Government do not value it citizen, when was the last time the president went to each state for spot checking of the ongoing development on each state if there is any at all ?????? we need our life back , we need our happiness back, we want a good home, we want good provision for our future generation , in what I see our politician do not have Good leader skills, no one of them has public relation experience, no one of them can even identify their strength and weakness as a leader, we need vibrant, smart , intelligent , innovative individual to pull this country from the gutter we have found ourself and take us forward

  • Sharia_Haram

GEJ MUST RULE regardless of performance. Northern Muslim presidents must account for their misrule before asking GEJ for his.

47 students of Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe State were killed by a group of Muslims not GEJ.

What are Muslims doing to rescue our girls from their brothers in Islam and also STOP the Sharia killing of non-Muslims?

I am using this opportunity to remind non-Muslims to vote wisely in the up coming election. Do not vote for advocates of Sharia. Vote to abolish sharia.

Sharia is a weapon of mass destruction. Sharia and its Caliphate had killed more people than any known disease in the world.

Sharia as a weapon of mass destruction was set in place by Muslims to eliminate non-Muslims in the north and by extension the whole of Nigeria. Boko-Haram are advocates of Sharia, so is ISIS and Buhari.

If they can adopt and impose sharia on Northern states that ordinarily belongs to non-Muslims and Muslims, they will definitely impose it on Nigeria. That is the impeding agenda. What we are witnessing in the North today is a pilot program of Sharia. While they watch the reaction of non-Muslims. A nation wild implementation will take effect once a Northern Muslim resume power. Beware!!!

on february 01, 2011 at 1:41 am in news
ANKARA, TURKEY — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, said he has no ambition to stay in office beyond 2015, assuring Nigerians in Diaspora that while he will not contest the 2015 election, he will ensure that this year’s election is free and fair.
The President promised that if voted in for the next four years, he would ensure significant improvement in key sectors of the economy — security, power, education, road, health amongst others.
“Without security, there is no government. So it is not debatable, it is something we have to addressed and we are working towards that with vigour. But if I’m voted into power within the next four years, the issue of power will become a thing of the past. Four years is enough for anyone in power to make significant improvement and if I can’t improve on power within this period, it then means I cannot do anything even if I am there for the next four years.”
Jonathan said this while interacting with Nigerians mainly diplomats working in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, UNECA, and the African Union, AU, in Addis-Ababa.
While fielding questions from those present at the interactive session on whether Nigerians abroad will vote, Jonathan said: “I would have loved that the Nigerians in Diaspora vote this year but to be frank with you, that is going to be difficult now. Presently, the law does not allow the voting outside Nigeria and so this year Nigerians in Diaspora will not vote but I will work towards it by 2015 even though I will not be running for election.”
On the issue of security, Jonathan said the government was doing everything possible to arrest the situation. He disclosed that all those involved in the October 1 bombing had been arrested and were being prosecuted. He, however, said he ordered the release of the car dealers because they were just businessmen who could not have known that the vehicles were to be used for such heinous crime.
On education, the President said, the nine new approved universities were to be specialised and to be headed by at least three Nigerians experts in Diaspora.
On the concerns raised of having a database of Nigerian experts in Diaspora, President Jonathan assured that he was working on creating a forum for interaction between them and government and also develop a database, where experts needed to address the various challenges of the economy will be drawn. He hinted that this was why the Diaspora Commission was being set up as the bill was already before the National Assembly.
The President also disclosed that the government is looking towards reviewing the country’s foreign policy to ensure that Nigeria gets maximum benefit from its roles and contributions to international organizations like the AU, UN and ECOWAS.
He lamented that right now Nigeria’s contributions were not being recognized adding that “there is need for Nigeria to have something in return for our investments. We are investing so much but it is not being noticed and there is need to reverse that trend.
On the concerns about road network and transportation in the country, President Jonathan assured that the railway system will be revamp because presently heavy duty vehicles were destroying the roads. “Why we cannot have continuous road maintenance for now because no contractor wants to go into it because of the continuous pressure on the road by heavy duty vehicles. That is why we are working to ensure that we revamp the rail”.
The President also assured that Nigerians working in international organization and institutions would be issued diplomatic passports. He directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odein Ajumogobia to submit the list of those qualified within the shortest possible time to him.
On the 35 per cent affirmative action implementation and the domestication of protocols signed, he assured that he will present before the National Assembly within the shortest possible time.
