Italian coastguards said dozens of people may have died in a new migrant shipwreck which occurred early Tuesday about 55 kilometres from the coast of Libya.

It said a passing oil tanker managed to rescue 15 people from the sea, who were transferred on to an Italian coastguard vessel and are due to arrive in Catania, Sicily, later on Tuesday.

The coastguard said it feared dozens more people are missing, and is coordinating search operations.
