Paedophile Priest: Pope accepts retirement of culpable cardinal

Pope Francis

The Vatican said on Monday in that Pope Francis had accepted the retirement of Cardinal Sean Brady.

Mr. Brandy was the leader of the Irish Catholic Church who has been accused of covering up the crimes of a paedophile priest.

The Vatican said he has served as archbishop of Armagh and primate of all Ireland since 1996.

According to the Vatican, Mr. Brady left the position after turning 75 last month upon reaching the Vatican’s retirement age.

It said he would be replaced by his 52-year-old deputy, Monsignor Eamon Martin.

In 2010, Mr. Brady faced calls to resign after admitting that he took part in a 1975 meeting at which teenagers who had been sexually abused by a priest were made to sign gag orders.

The offending priest, Brendan Smyth, was not reported to civilian authorities and went on to abuse more children. He was eventually arrested in 1994 and died three years later.

Mr. Brady made no direct reference to the controversy in a valedictory message published on the website of the Archdiocese of Armagh.
