The victim was a candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party in a local election.
Gunmen on Thursday kidnapped the son of Pakistan’s former premier, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, during an election rally in eastern Punjab province, police said.
The gunmen opened fire from a car on Syed Ali Haider Gilani, a candidate for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), who was meeting supporters in his hometown of Multan.
“As people ran in panic, they caught Gilani, put him in their car and sped away,” local police chief Mohammad Aslam told dpa over the phone.
“One person identified as the secretary of Gilani was killed in the firing and two other civilians were injured.’’
No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
The younger Gilani is running for the Punjab provincial legislature in Punjab, in the east of the country. Two of his brothers are running for the national legislature.
The former prime minister was banned last year by the Supreme Court from holding public office or taking part in the elections for five years after being found guilty of contempt of court.
Pakistan’s general election on Saturday will mark the first-ever democratic transition from one government to another in the country’s 65-year history.
More than 110 people have been killed in dozens of bombing attacks targeting politicians since campaigns began in April.
On Wednesday, two people were killed and one wounded when a bomb exploded near a house in northern Bajau district where a candidate from the secular Awami National Party was holding a meeting.
