Medical doctor turns musician

Olatunde Richard Oniwinde is a certified medical doctor who works at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.

But there is one thing that makes him a unique doctor. While some of his colleagues prefer to establish  private Medical Centres to further boost their sources of income, Dr. Oniwinde is looking in another direction – music.

Dr. Oniwinde has a music band and this has remained a huge topic of discourse in social settings in Abeokuta and environs. The band has some undergraduates as members. His type of music, which is Ibile Sounds, has become a household name in Ogun State and environs.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES in Abeokuta, the doctor talked about his background, his medical practice, his love for music and his future plans in the music industry.

The Oyo State doctor and musician graduated from the University of Ibadan, and worked at General Hospital, Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, in 2004, as a youth corps member. On May 19,2007, he got married to Folashade, a graduate of Demography/Statistics from the Obafemi Awolowo University{OAU}. His wife doubles as his backup singer.

According to Oniwinde, he started playing music at the age of eight. He said that “music has always been in his blood”. In Yobe State, during his national youth service,  he was the music director.

On how he copes with his medical practice, the physician said “there has never and can never be a clash”. He explained that his medical practice comes first because it deals with lives. “I play music during my free time, medical practice gives me happiness, but music gives me joy”.

The doctor is known as Omoluwabi 1 of Africa on stage.

He has played at the Annual General Meeting{AGM} of Association of Resident Doctors of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, where he works. He said he has also played at the hospital’s end-of-year parties, various club houses and other social events.

“Anytime, I’m contacted, as long as it does not clash with my normal medical line of duty and call hours, I am always available and ready-made,” he said. He said at every event, he had the audience wrapped up in the band’s dexterity.

The other members of his band are: Egunsola Babatunde, an HND Marketing graduate of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta who plays the talking drum,  Olugbenga Koiki{Tenor Singer}, a graduate of Accountancy from the Federal College of Education{FCE}, Abeokuta. Mr. Koiki  is the tenor singer.

Others are: Olawuyi Akinola, a 300-level Economics Student of Tai Solarin University of Education who plays the keyboard, and businessman Leke Akintunde, who is the band’s guitarist.

On his mission in the music industry, Oniwinde said that he has plans to release his first album soon.

He says, “I am using and going to use music to reach the world about Africanism and the rich ideology of African founding fathers and mothers, to project Africa Art and Culture.”
