Why I filed for a divorce- Ini Edo

A popular Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, took to Twitter on Thursday to explain why she filed for divorce from her husband.

There had been reports in the media that the actress and her husband were divorcing because of infidelity on her part.

Ms. Edo denied the reports, stating that she never cheated and that she filed for a divorce due to issues that could not be resolved.

“There is a conscious and malicious attempt at tarnishing my image,” she said.

Ms. Edo and Philip Ehiagwina, who lives in the United States, got married in November, 2008 and called it quits five weeks ago.

The actress has deleted her estranged husband’s name from all her social media accounts except her Twitter handle, which remains @ini4phil; Phil for her husband.

The former couple did not have children together.

This is becoming a disturbing and disgusting trend in Nigeria. Why must people take to public media to write and comment on issues that are essentially private to them? Marriage and inter-party relationships within it should be something nobody else must hear about. It is essentially private, no matter how public gossip and prompting might push to have such divulged. If the parties decide to divorce, it is still a private matter, otherwise what would any of the parties gain by announcing to the world that he/she is divorced? Even if the public accuse any of the parties of infidelity, why should that bother such a person if his/her conscience is clear? And if such a person is unfaithful he/she is unfaithful to his/her marriage partner and not to any other person!

Nigerians must stop this washing of dirty linens in the middle of Abuja Central Business District.
