Africa Magic award-winning actor, Tope Tedela, denies not receiving payment for role.

The winner of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCA, Best Actor in a Drama, Tope Tedela, has denied reports that he was not paid for his award winning role in the movie, A Mile Away From Home.

Entertainment news site,, had quoted journalist, Olumide Iyanda, as saying on Twitter that Mr. Tedela was not paid for his work on the movie as it was shot on a meagre budget.

In a recent chat with PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Tedela said, “That’s not exactly true. In the business of filmmaking, it’s common practice for an actor to take on a gig without getting a salary in the hope of getting remuneration when the film gets distribution. That is the case here. I let go of pay upfront to get the film made.”

Mr. Tedela, who is a graduate of Mass Communication from University of Lagos, said he was surprised when he was announced winner. It was his first nomination and he won over more seasoned actors like Ghana’s Majid Michel.

“I’m delighted, encouraged, challenged and surprised,” he said of his win.

On upcoming movie projects, he said: “There were several projects in the works. Most recently, I was part of the cast in the plays that showed at British Council’s 2nd Lagos Theatre Festival. In a few weeks and later in the year, Apostates, a drama directed by James Omokwe and In My Father’s House, a supernatural thriller helmed by Jimi Odumosu would be released respectively”.

With the critically acclaimed AMVCA award in his bag, the A Mile from Home star hopes to hit the global stage just like Kenya’s Lupita Nyong’o in the nearest future.
