The actor is known amongst his peers as the Wizkid.
Murtala Balala is popularly called the Wizkid in Kannywood; thanks to his – sometimes simultaneous – turns as cameraman, actor, and film director.
In this interview with PREMIUM TIMES, Balala, who is married with two children, talks about his times in Kannywood, and directing his own production.
How do you feel about your nickname, the Wizkid?
I feel elated and grateful to Allah. It also give me the courage to work harder in my career.
What were the challenges you encountered when joining Kannywood?
One of my challenges was choosing a particular area of specialisation. With my multiple talents, it was obvious that it would be confusing for me. In the end, I chose to direct, even though, I feature in some scene in the movies. I also still do the camera work while directing.
Which was the first movie you directed?
I was the assistant director for the movie Sangaya and directed Kubura; these were my first two movies.
What would you say interests you the most in the movie industry?
The commitment from the actors, producers, singers and everybody else. During production, one can see the maximum dedication and hard work in all of us.
What do you think needs to be done to improve Kannywood movie industry?
Lack of up to date equipment is the major problem in Kannywood. We lack sophisticated equipment like HD Cameras, mics, HD editing studios. If we get past this, Kannywood would be better.
How do you see the Kannywood in the next 10 years?
With the way we are going right now, in 10 years, Kannywood movies would be selected for international awards.
Which movie has been the most challenging for you?
Ashabul Kahfi was very challenging. It was hectic all through. I was shuttling between camera work and directing.

Are you likely to produce your own movies?
Of course, yes. In fact, by next year I should have one out, Insha Allah.
Which foreign actor would you want to meet?
Harrison Ford.
Who is your favourite Kannywood actor?
Ali Nuhu is my favorite even though others like Sadiq Sani Sadiq, Sadiq Ahmed, Sani Danja and Adam Zango are also great actors.
