He knocked Kanye West’s “Yeezus” off the top spot.
Nigerian-American rapper, Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, better known as Wale, whose album, “The Gifted”, was released on June 25 has sold 158,000 copies in its first week, knocking Kanye West’s “Yeezus” from the top spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Hitting number one spot on album sales has given Wale, based in Northwest, Washington DC, the fame he has been pursuing for almost a decade.
Earlier, Wale, an MMG artiste, had tweeted about the likelihood of a No. 1 album before the Billboard’s Wednesday announcement; “[Haters] tryna troll durin my victory lap, don’t even brush they teeth before they get in my situation daily. Won’t ruin my day nope”, he tweeted.
Before Wale, only two rappers had topped the albums chart in 2013, Kanye West and ASAP Rocky.
With the early success of “The Gifted”, the former Interscope Records artiste hopes to get the attention he deserves. Wale’s second album, “Ambition” released in November 2011 premiered at No. 2, selling 164,000 copies with mixed reviews.
