I’m not in competition with other female acts- Zaina

The upcoming singer talks about her start in the business.

Upcoming singer, Zaina says she is not out to prove a point with her career. The singer who is signed onto Darey Art-Alade’s Soul Muzik released her debut single, Lolola a few weeks back.

“I don’t think Nigerians are hard to please, I think they appreciate when someone is themselves and puts their best foot forward. So far the response to my music has been positive and received openly,” Zaina said during an interview.

With a number of impressive female singers such as Tiwa Savage, Waje and Seyi Shay to look out for, the UK raised artiste is undeterred, and remains focused, saying that with persistence and hard work she will break through in the music industry.

“Well, actually I’m not trying to give the other female artists a run for their money; I’m trying to be globally and internationally known musically among male and female artists. So, in a sense, I’m up against the music and not anyone in particular.”

She insists that her relationship with other female artistes is cordial. “I’ve known most of them for quite some time and have close friendships with a lot of them.”

Influenced by the likes of Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince and Fela, Zaina says she feels lucky to be the only female act on Darey’s label.

“It feels great to be the first lady of anything I think. But most of all it’s a privilege and an honor because Darey is one person who is described as being a perfectionist and very well respected among his peers. Both Darey and (producer) MoEazy are like brothers to me and they take that role very seriously, I feel safe and protected in all aspects of my career and even personal life with them.”

Zaina like most musicians started her journey into music as a child, from secondary school where she played the tuba and trumpet. Later, she started singing and writing songs in her spare time. She then became a model and invested money she made from modeling into her music.

“I started doing local (music) competitions and talent shows. The rest just flowed naturally. I would meet industry people and other artists etc; before I knew it, I was engrossed in the industry.”

Describing herself as an enigma, Zaina says her fans should expect more singles, music videos and stage performances from her as those are the projects she is currently working on.
