A total of 205 Nigerian authors in the country and Diaspora have submitted entries for the 2013 Nigeria Prize for Literature sponsored by Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG.

According to Kudo Eresia-Eke, General Manager, External Relations, the literary award is aimed at encouraging reading and writing among Nigerians. Mr. Eresia-Eke was speaking on Friday at the handing over ceremony of the entries for the 2013 edition by Ayo Banjo, the Chairman, Advisory Board for Literature, to the panel of judges.

The annual prize bestows public recognition and a monetary award of $100, 000 (about N16 million) on the winner with two runner-ups cited for honourable mention. The prize is rotated each year, amongst four literary genres – prose fiction, poetry, drama & children’s literature. This year’s award focuses on poetry.

Mr. Banjo, a former Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, said in his remarks that the award will be given to the best author to reward excellence and celebrate outstanding literary works.

He described the number of entries this year as impressive, although 214 authors submitted entries in 2012.

“Literature scholars should be exposed and that is what this award is all about; it is all about excellence. We are putting our writers in the limelight, they are worth celebrating,” he said.

Romanus Egudu, head of the judges, said that the parameters for selecting the winner will be excellent creativity.

“We expect nothing less, either the best or nothing,” he said.

The Nigeria Prize for Literature was founded in 2004. Past winners have included Mabel Segun, Gabriel Okara, Akachi Ezeigbo and last year’s winner, Chika Unigwe.
