Five upcoming Nigerian acts to look out for in 2013

Tonto Dikeh

Artist that might rock the year 2013.

Ms. Jaie – It’s a shame that her first single Kilon-Poppin did not reach the anthem status that it deserved. On that one song alone, she displayed a great vocal ability reminiscent of Brandy circa 90’s. She’s one of the female artistes who have taken time to create a particular/unique image for themselves- she calls her “Dime Doll.” She is currently signed on to Storm Records. With her album set to drop in 2013, we look forward to seeing her take her crown as a true afro-pop princess.

dammy kraneDammy Krane- This dude has been around for sometime; but this year, he really made his presence felt with his single “My Dear.” With his style of afro-pop mixed with juju, he’s definitely interested in pleasing a large audience and one very close to the streets. This, however, doesn’t mean the sophisticated crowd can’t enjoy him too. He is currently signed onto Tuface’s Hypertek Records. With a great role model like that behind him, we can’t wait to see him blow 2013 up!

Tonto-DikeTonto Dikeh – Hate on her singing abilities all you want but the Poko mistress is determined to make it in music much as she has done in acting. Yes, her voice is auto-tuned to the skies but she has the money- and the drive- to churn out “hits” all the same. To her critics she has said, your hate only makes her better and she’s learning. So who knows, her next “hit” might just shut you all up! Most importantly, her fans/sycophants are solidly behind her, determined to lap up whatever crap she dishes out meaning that she’s going to blow no matter what – or maybe not. Only 2013 will tell. Meanwhile, she is performing at this year’s Rhythm Unplugged which is ironic because you really need plugs to listen to Tonto. Still, it’s Poko, baby!

Burna-Boy1Burna Boy- Personally, I call Burna Boy Twitter-famous because that’s where most of his fans reside. However, he has got real fans in the world too, but not enough- not just yet. His shade at Tonto – where he tweeted whack artistes deserve death right after she released her first two singles – gave him a bit more popularity outside his rabid fan base. Falling off the stage at a show also helped his case too. But luckily, he has enough talent to make all those misadventures a mere side show. His single – Like To Party – made most critics’ choice list. We see great things for him in 2013 so long as he remains in the middle and not at the edge of a stage.

skalesSkales- Thanks to his EME affiliation, young Skales is clearly the most established up-coming act on this list. It is almost seems redundant to call him upcoming. But we are still waiting for his debut album. Apart from singles, he appeared on the EME collaborative album. Clearly, he is being prepped to take up from where Whizkid left up in what was clearly a winning year for the Banky W helmed record label. Hopefully, in 2013 he drops an album that tallies with what we can only refer to so far as hype.
