PREMIUM TIMES columnist and Canada-based Nigerian writer, scholar, and public intellectual, Pius Adesanmi, will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Association of Nigeria Authors convention coming up in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, November 8th to 11th.

He will be speaking on the convention theme: Nigerian Literature, Social Media and Security.

Mr. Adesanmi is the internationally-acclaimed winner of the Penguin Prize for African Writing with his book, You’re not a Country, Africa (Penguin Books, 2011). His first book, The Wayfarer and Other Poems, won the Association of Nigerian Authors Poetry Prize in 2001.

He obtained a First Class Honours degree in French Studies from the University of Ilorin, a Masters and a PhD in the same discipline from the University of Ibadan and the University of British Columbia respectively. He has since pursued a career as a scholar of Francophone and Anglophone African and Black Diasporic literatures and cultures.

A widely cited commentator on African politics, literature, and culture, Adesanmi teaches African literature and African cultural studies in the English and French Departments at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Before he joined Carleton University in 2006, he was an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the Pennsylvania State University, USA, from 2002-2005.

He is a Fellow of the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA Ibadan 1993-1997) and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS-Research 1998 & 2000) and has guest-lectured widely in Universities in Africa, Europe, and North America. He has also consulted widely for Universities in Africa, Europe, the United States and Canada on issues relating to Africanist capacity building, culture, and curriculum development.

Mr. Adesanmi serves on the editorial and management board of numerous Africa-focused peer-reviewed scholarly journals and ezines, notably, Research in African Literatures, The Maple Leaf Literary Supplement, Irinkerindo, and African Writing. Apart from writing regular scholarly articles for these and many other journals, he has guest-edited special issues of Research in African Literatures, English in Africa, and Comparative Literary Studies on topical issues in contemporary African literatures and cultures. He is also known for a good number of classic and polemical op-eds on the African condition in major pan-African and international news sites such as Pambazuka, Counterpunch, Chimurenga, and The Zeleza Post. He writes a syndicated weekly column on Nigeriana for Sahara Reporters and Premium Times.

The convention in Uyo will also have the sub themes: Nigerian Writing in the Social Media, Literacies and Insecurities in the Age of the Internet, Corruption, Conflicts and the other Crises of Development, The Challenge of (Online) Book Publishing and Marketing and National Security, National Literature, National Imagination.
