Abuja Film Village will create thousands of jobs- Village boss

Employment in Nigeria’s creative industries is set to receive another boost once the Abuja Film Village is completed.

The Managing Director of the Film Village, Segun Oyekunle, said on Thursday in Abuja, that the project would empower Nigerian youth and impact strongly on establishing Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, as a major film production and tourism centre.

The project, Mr. Oyekunle said, can generate billions of naira in economic benefits, when in full operation.

“The Theme Park has the capacity to create tens of thousands of new jobs during construction, and while in operation [it will] provide training opportunities in the audiovisual sector. It will raise the professional know-how of the industry in all its aspects and thereby improve on its overall quality, with the goal to maximise its capacity to earn substantial returns from its products both at home and abroad,” he said.

The Abuja Film Village, according to Mr. Oyekunle, will inspire Nigerian filmmakers to improve themselves through numerous training opportunities that will boost the local film production structure and industry framework.

Speaking further, he said that in spite of UNESCO’s rating of the Nigerian film industry as the world’s second most-prolific, its quality remains largely sub-standard and its returns on investment low.
