UBA appoints new non-executive director, awaits CBN approval for half-year report

United Bank for Africa Plc has approved the appointment of Ibrahim Puri as a Non-Executive Director of the bank, subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The appointment was disclosed in a regulatory filing signed by Bili Odum, the Group Company Secretary, on Thursday.

Speaking on the appointment, the Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, said the board was confident that Mr Puri’s extensive experience, depth of expertise and sound judgement would further strengthen the group’s growth.

“I congratulate Ibrahim Puri on his appointment as a Non-Executive Director. The Board is confident that his extensive experience, depth of expertise and sound judgement will further strengthen the Board and contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and success of the Group,” Mr Elumelu said.

Puri is an accomplished financial services leader and corporate executive with over 35 years’ experience across banking, fintech, telecommunications and FMCG.

He previously served on the board of UBA as an Executive Director, retiring in 2022, and currently serves on several boards as a Non-Executive Director, including Nigerian Breweries Plc and 9mobile (now T2).

Puri has attended executive programmes at Harvard University, the University of Oxford and Euromoney London.

He holds a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from Bayero University, Kano, with expertise in structured finance, negotiation, board governance and turnaround management.

Half-year statement

UBA, which operates in 20 African countries as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates, also said its board had approved the Group’s audited accounts and financial statements for the half-year ended 30 June 2026.

The Group said in the regulatory filing that the half-year financial statements were approved at its board meeting on 13 August, but remained subject to CBN approval before publication.

The lender further noted that the investing public would be notified immediately upon receipt of CBN approval of the financial statements.

“Consequently, the Bank’s closed period will continue to run until 24 hours after the 2026 Half-Year Audited Accounts and Financial Statements are released to the public,” the financial group stated.

For Nigerian listed companies whose financial year ends on 31 December, H1 results covering January to June must be filed with NGX by the applicable half-year reporting deadline, subject to regulatory requirements for banks.
