The governors say IBB is a symbol of patriotism, vision, courage
As former President Ibrahim Babangida turns 71 on Friday, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has saluted him, saying his life is a testimony to good leadership and purposeful living.
The Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Niger, Babangida Aliyu, described Babangida as a symbol of statesmanship, patriotism, vision and courage.
A statement signed by Mr. Aliyu’s Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo, said Mr. Babangida excelled in his chosen profession and went on to preside over Nigeria through rare vision, courage and exemplary leadership.
The statement said IBB had consistently remained on the path of promoting national unity, integration and development with his influential networks cutting across the nation and beyond.
The forum said the history of Nigeria would be incomplete without paying tribute to IBB’s contributions and achievements to the socio-economic and political development of the country.
It listed the achievements of the former leader to include the realisation of the vision of Abuja as the Federal Capital City by providing the most vital infrastructure and moving the seat of power from Lagos in 1991.
The statement also referred to the liberalisation of the broadcast industry, the licensing of private universities and airlines and the liberalisation of the banking industry.
Others include the establishment of community banks (now micro-finance institutions) as among IBB’s notable legacies.
The forum prayed God to grant IBB excellent health, courage and many more years of selfless service to Nigeria and humanity.
