Fire guts WEMA Bank headquarters

WEMA Bank .... on fire

A late afternoon fire has gutted the corporate haeadquarters of Wema Bank on 54 Marina, Lagos, forcing the bank to evacuate staff, eyewitnesses say.

Staff were seen scampering out of the complex after an alarm sounded that fire had gutted the building.

The extent of damage to the building is not clear yet as firemen are still battling to contain the inferno.

We however gathered that no life was lost, although some staff reportedly fell as they scampered to safety.

The bank’s spokesperson, Femi Adeniran, confirmed the incident. He said the fire started from the building’s generator house.

“Firemen moved in quickly, and we were able contain the situation,” he said. “I can confirm to you that danger has been averted.”

Mr. Adeniran however wouldn’t disclose the extent of damage to the building. “We have evacuated staff and we are still trying to ascertain the extent of damage,” he said. “We want to be sure it didn’t affect more than the generator house.”
