National Identity Management Commission workers protest sack

The workers claim they were unjustly sacked by the Nigerian agency.

Some 1,000 former workers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), on Tuesday protested against their sack, and blocked the entrance into the National Assembly complex.

During the protest, many legislators and workers were locked out.

At least 4,000 workers of the Commission were reportedly sacked in 2012 allegedly for inability to meet up with a six-year period of grace given to them to acquire university education.

A security officer at the gate said on condition of anonymity that the protesting workers arrived at the complex as early as 7 a.m. before workers of the Assembly resumed duty.

They, however, refused to talk to newsmen, saying that the media had not treated them fairly.

Tuesday’s protest is the third in the last three months that the sacked workers would be staging at the assembly complex.

On February 6 this year, the House of Representatives appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on the Federal Civil Service Commission to re-absorb the former workers into other ministries, departments and agencies.
