The National Communication Commission, NCC, at the weekend sealed off the premises of a communication outfit in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for allegedly engaging in illegal registration and sale of SIM cards of Global Satellite Mobile (GSM) communications.

The company, Sunbifo Group Nigeria Limite, located within the Iyeoma Plaza at Alagbaka area of Akure, was alleged to have registered SIM cards with fictitious names using photographs in almanacs. It then began selling same to subscribers at higher prices than what is being sold in the market.

Nov. 4 (PREMIUM TIMES) — Two of the workers of the company were arrested by the team of officials from the NCC while the owner of the company was absent  when the commission’s enforcement team stormed the place.

The Head of Enforcement of the NCC, Efosa Idehen, said the commission had been tracing the activities of the company over time.

He said nine machines used for the illegal registration had been traced to Ondo State adding that three out of the machines had been traced to the sealed company.

Mr. Idehen said those engaging in illegal sim registration were frustrating the efforts of the commission to have accurate database of GSM subscribers.

He said the commission might need to evolve a new policy with service providers to ensure proper registration of GSM service subscribers.

Mr. Idehen explained that it is an offence for the communication services dealers to sell pre-registered SIM cards to members of the public saying under the law the identity of a holder of a telephone line must be verifiable by the commission.
