Moffi joins HSV from French Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice after completing his mandatory medical examinations at the Athleticum at Volkspark last weekend, before putting pen to paper on his contract.

The Nigerian striker will wear the No. 9 shirt at his new club as he begins another chapter in a career that has already taken him across several European leagues.

HSV sporting director Kathleen Krüger believes Moffi’s experience and versatility will add another dimension to the club’s attack.

“Terem fits perfectly with our orientation. With his commitment, we are setting ourselves even wider and more variable in the Sturmzentrum and thus increasing our quality,” Krüger said.

“Through his career path so far, he brings extensive experience at a high international level and can also pass this on to our talents. We are pleased that Terem is at the HSV, and welcome him warmly.”

Sports director Claus Costa also highlighted the physical qualities and attacking versatility Moffi will bring to the squad.

“We are very pleased that we have succeeded in signing Terem. Terem is a striker who is difficult to control due to his physique, determination and style of play,” Costa said.

“He can attack the depth, has an enormous presence in the penalty area and brings the necessary quality with his back to the goal.

“We are convinced that Terem will give our game additional punch and our squad additional variability. Now it is important to integrate him quickly so that we can start the new Bundesliga season as a team with a lot of energy and conviction.”

Moffi begins seventh-country adventure

At 27, Moffi has already built an impressive European football journey, with Germany becoming the seventh country in which he has played professionally.

Born in Calabar, Nigeria, in May 1999, Moffi moved to England at 17, where he attended the Buckswood Football Academy before beginning his professional career in Lithuania.

He first played for FK Kauno Zalgiris before moving to FK Riteriai. In January 2020, he moved to Belgium to join KV Kortrijk before later that year moving to France with FC Lorient.

His performances at Lorient earned him a move to OGC Nice in early 2023, while he spent the second half of last season on loan at Portuguese giants FC Porto.

Across those clubs, Moffi recorded 88 goals and 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances. The striker has also been a Nigerian international since 2021, making 23 appearances for the Super Eagles, with six goals and two assists to his name.

Moffi made his international debut alongside his new HSV teammate Jordan Torunarigha for Nigeria in October 2023.

Moffi excited by HSV challenge

The Nigerian revealed that conversations with the coach played an important role in convincing him to make the move, while Hamburger SV’s stature and history also appealed to him.

“The coach was really very convincing in the talks. The location with its great fans and the entire orientation of the club also played a role in my decision,” Moffi said.

“Even if the HSV spent a few years in the 2. League, the club is still a big name, all over the world.

“When I told my father about the interest, he immediately knew which club it was and was full of anticipation. For me, that was crazy in a positive way. I’m all the happier to be a part of history and the club myself.”

Moffi also outlined what HSV supporters can expect from him, insisting that while scoring goals remains his primary responsibility, he is equally committed to contributing to the collective effort.

“As a striker, I love to score goals, but I also love working for the team and keeping the whole group together,” he said.

“I’m now the new guy in the team, which is always a bit strange for yourself at first, but I’m very happy to get to know everyone now and get started together soon.”

With HSV now preparing for the new Bundesliga campaign, Moffi will hope his goals, physical presence and experience can help the club make a strong return to the German top flight.
