The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Defenders finally cemented their qualification to the DStv Premier Basketball league with a 67-47 points victory over Zamfara Shooter after three failed attempts to gain promotion from the National Division One championship.
The Defenders, who were relegated in controversial circumstances in 2012, led from start to finish courtesy of Joel Ijigba’s 18 points and a combined 17 points from Martins Ozege and EfeJonathan to ensure the team made it 7 wins out of seven.
The Defenders will now face off against Hoop and Read in the fight for the champion of the National Division 1 basketball championship on Sunday at the indoor sports all of the National stadium(Package B), Abuja.
Assistant coach of the team, Monday Puzo, acknowledged the huge relief and the team’s readiness to play in the premier League.
“We were really hurt by our relegation in 2012 which wasn’t our fault because we didn’t directly forfeit 2 games that got us relegated,” he said.
” I am delighted we finally got back to the league and this time, we are well equipped to fight with the big boys in the conference and make the playoffs with the aid of NSCDC management.”
The NSCDC team will replace another paramilitary side, Nigeria Immigration basketball club, who finished bottom in the Savannah conference last season.
