Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun, could only play for 18 minutes in the final day of action in the German Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Nigerian defender had to give way for Alexander Hack as it was feared that he may have cupped another injury.
At the end, Balogun’s Mainz 05 were beaten 2-0 by FC Koln, but they were still lucky to escape relegation from the German Bundesliga.
Mainz finished at the 15th spot just above the relegation playoff spot and they would be thanking their stars for beating the drop after a largely disappointing season in which they won only 10 of the 34 matches they played.
Balogun is among the 25 Super Eagles players invited for the two international friendly matches, against the senior national teams of Corsica and Togo respectively, before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Uyo next month.
While Balogun was lucky with Mainz to escape relegation, his compatriot Victor Osimhen and his Wolfsburg teammates still have their hearts in their mouths as they are condemned to relegation playoffs.
Osimhen played his second game of the season for Wolfsburg on Saturday but his presence could not save the day as they were beaten 2-1 by Hamburger SV and now drop to the relegation playoff spot.
Osimhen was introduced into Saturday’s game in the 76th minute, replacing Sebastian Jung but he had no effect like Hamburger’s Gian-Luca Waldschmidt who came in at the 86th minute and scored two minutes later to save his side from relegating.
As it stands, Wolfsburg will be have to overcome the teams eyeing promotion from the Bundesliga 2 to keep their elite status in Germany.
