Nigeria League: Rangers inch closer to breaking 32-year Jinx


Enugu Rangers took a big step to ending their 32-year wait for silverware as they beat Sunshine Stars 2-0 on Sunday to return to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League table.

A brace from Bobby Clement was all the Flying Antelopes required to secure all three points and return to the number one position on the NPFL standings with two games left to go.

Clement got the first of his two goals in the 37th minute after he was set up by Ocheme Edoh.

The big striker who was voted man-of-the-match completed his brace early in the second half as Rangers increased their points tally to 57 points from 34 games.

Next stop for the Coach Imama Amakapabor tutored side is an away game to Ikorodu united before ending their campaign with a home game against El-Kanemi Warriors.

Rivers United who were occupying the top spot before Sunday’s games have dropped to second having been beaten 1-0 by fellow title chasers Wikki Tourists.

Elsewhere, Ikorodu United have mathematically been relegated from the NPFL after their five-match unbeaten run was ended in Jos on Sunday by Plateau United.

Plateau United defeated the Oga Boys by a lone goal which meant the Lagos team stay on 32 points with just two more games to play this season.

The goal that has all but confirmed that Ikorodu United will be playing in the Nigeria National League, NNL next season came from Kelechi John.

In Port Harcourt, the other Lagos team, MFM FC, gave their survival quest a big boost as they forced Enyimba to a goalless draw.
