Oscar Pistorius says he accidentally shot and killed his girlfriend at his home.
Following intense hearings, a Magistrate Court in South Africa has granted bail to Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee accused of killing his girlfriend.
Pistorius, an Olympic medalist, will therefore be freed from custody pending the date of his trial.
Mr. Pistorius was charged on a one-count of premeditated murder over the Valentine’s Day killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp; an incident that deeply touched his home country, South Africa, and the world.
He claims he accidentally shot Ms. Steenkamp, while she was in the bathroom because he thought her a dangerous intruder lurking in the toilet stall of his bathroom.
The magistrate, Desmond Nair, granted Pistorius bail set at 1 million rand.
The magistrate also ordered Pistorius to surrender his passport and firearms as well as stay away from his home and witnesses in his trial.
Pistorius, the magistrate ordered, should not use alcohol or drugs before his trial.
During Friday’s hearing, South African prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, devoted much of Friday’s bail hearing trying to cast a shadow of improbability over Oscar Pistorius’ version of events about the night he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
