The London team is now third on the Premier League table.

Chelsea are back in third spot on the English Premier League table after romping to a 4-1 win over relegation threatened Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening

Goals from Ramires, Eden Hazard, in-form Frank Lampard, and Marco Marin ensured that the Blues will end the weekend in third sport after being previously unseated by Tottenham Hotspurs who secured a win in their early kick-off against Newcastle.

Ramires combined well with Fernando Torres and slotted a pass from the Spaniard to put Chelsea ahead in the 23rd minute. Eden Hazard doubled Chelsea’s lead in the 56th minute to mark his return to action.

However, Wigan gave a fight as they were not willing to go down with no try and Maloney squeezed in a goal two minutes after Hazard’s to reduce the advantage to 2-1.

Having given up two goals in their last two games, Chelsea knew they needed to do more to ensure they have all three points in the kitty; and that was when Frank Lampard and Marco Marin stood up with a goal each to save the blushes of their under fire manager, Rafa Benitez, who could have been given the booth if he had failed to secure all three points against the visiting Wigan side.

In other venues, Arsenal kept alive their hopes of a top-four finish and Champions League football as they scraped a lone goal victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Santi Carzola was the hero for the Gunners as his first half goal was good enough to secure all three points despite later losing Carl Jekinson to a red card early in the second half

For Queens Park Rangers, the hope of surviving relegation is getting slimmer by the day as they were hammered 4-1 by Swansea.

In the other two fixtures already decided, Tottenham Hotspurs and Stoke City were 2-1 winners over Newcastle and Reading respectively.
