The coach says the club will be a formidable team by the second season.
The newly appointed Chief Coach of Sunshine Stars International FC, Abimbola Samuel, said on Thursday that his intention is to build an unbeatable team with a distinct playing culture within two seasons.
Mr. Samuel, who replaced Gbenga Ogunbote at the end of last season, told journalists in Akure that the nation would witness a unique Sunshine Stars that would dazzle all in the league.
The former Gateway FC sweat merchant, who is also the first Assistant Coach of the national under-20 team, the Flying Eagles, said though his first season in charge may not translate into a league topping performance, by the second season, fans and supporters of the club would have a team they can be proud of.
He said handling a team like Sunshine that reached the quarter-finals of the Confederation Cup and semi-finals of the CAF Champions League places a lot of pressure on a coach.
“But my plan is to build a formidable team, a team that is disciplined and have a playing culture.
“And if by God’s grace we are able to maintain a position that is not below 4th on the league table in the first season, then I can assure all that by the second season we can present an unbeatable team.
“By then, the players and I would have been well acquainted with one another. But right now, we are just getting acquainted with one another,” he said.
He said, however, that if the opportunity to win the league trophy comes in his first season, he will grab it with both hands.
“We will work hard to top the league in our first season but I am not promising that we will top the league this season. But if by divine providence it comes our way, so be it,” the coach said.
